Having a Foundation

As we close the door on 2025 and head into another year, let’s reflect on what lies ahead. It’s easy to focus on negativity these days. It seems that as much as we try to keep our “digital feeds” positive on things like laughs, fun stories, recipes, sports, learning, or inspiration, we inevitably wind up flipping through stories around politics, fighting, and other negative worldly news.

Fortunately, one of the wonderful things about being human, is that we have the autonomy to control our attention. We can choose what we ingest into our heads and our hearts. Notice the words “can choose.” Often, we don’t make that intentional choice. We simply ingest what the world gives. While growing up, did your mom ever ask, “if they jumped off of a cliff would you follow?” Of course, when you were ten, you rolled your eyes and said “no, I wouldn’t.” So why do we accept the status quo and follow the crowd as adults?  The deep, scientific answer to this question includes evolution of our species and safety in societal norms.  The short answer: it’s easy and safe.

Imagine if, in 2026, we each focus on our own personal values rather than following the crowd. As a Christian, these values are clear for me, though they often go against what is popular, easy, (and even safe). They’re based in service, prayer, relationship, health, and humility.

One of my favorite teachings from Jesus comes in Matthew 7:24-27. Matthew 7 is loaded with wonderful teachings. Here, Jesus describes the importance of having a foundation built on rock, not sand, to face life. Every one of us will face hardships, suffering, and ultimately, death. A foundation of His teachings filled with faith, hope, and love carry us through troubles the world throws our way.

For the logo for Chris Guzniczak Counseling, LLC, I chose a “capped, open delta symbol.” The delta symbol represents movement, the fact that life is always progressing. It also happens to have a solid base (foundation).  The cap on top of the delta (pointed up) represents forward movement. We must have our focus on what is ahead of us. Ahead lies what God has for us when we are through with this world. Lastly, the opening represents being open to changes (opportunities and hardships), either in thought or in having an open heart.

Be the keeper of what you allow into your mind and into your heart. You can be aware of worldly matters without letting them consume you. Be intentional with your mind and your heart as this guides your whole life!  You can be a beacon of faith, hope, and love in your own way every day!!!

Happy New Year!!
